Intercoolers Explained
The intercooler's job is to cool the compressed, heated air charge before it enters the engine's combustion chamber. This cooled air charge increases the engine's horsepower.
Hot air is thinner and contains less oxygen than cold air does. By cooling the air, we increase the number of oxygen molecules in the charge. Cooled air prevents detonation. Inspect the intercooler if a supercharged engine detonates while accelerating.
Liquid-cooled intercoolers contain an intercooler, piping, and a radiator. Their leak tested with a cooling system tester fitted with a special adapter.
Found between the supercharger and the engine's intake manifold. A leak in the intercooler can result in white-colored exhaust. It's because coolant burns white in the combustion chamber.
Performance engine's stress and prematurely wear the engine's oil requiring an oil cooler and an intercooler. Many parts on these engines are unique and reinforced to withstand these additional pressures.
